Interview with Axel Scheffler - Illustrator of The Gruffalo

The children’s classic, The Gruffalo, has sold over 10 million copies worldwide. A story about a cunning mouse who manages to outsmart all of the animals he encounters in the wood including The Gruffalo to avoid being eaten. We spoke to Alex Scheffler who has achieved worldwide acclaim for his children’s book illustration, and his books have been translated into over thirty languages. He divides his time between the UK and Germany.

What inspired you to become an illustrator?

The idea to become an illustrator came while I was at art college studying visual communications.

How did it feel bringing The Gruffalo to life?

I had a really hard time doing the drawings for The Gruffalo, so it didn't feel very great.

How would you describe your working relationship with Julia Donaldson?

I don't really work together on a book with Julia. She does the text ,sends it to the publisher and they pass it on to me. I am of course extremely happy to collaborate with such a brilliant writer on those books.

Who is your favourite character in The Gruffalo?

The Mouse.

What is your favourite part in the story

When the mouse meets The Gruffalo.

What are your top five items you must have on your desk when working?

I would need my dip pen, ink, paper, pencil , a radio...but then that would be 5 things already and I wouldn't be able to colour anything in!

What advice would you give to a child who wants to become an illustrator?

I would advise to draw a lot and to look at lots of pictures and books.

What does it mean to you to have illustrated The Gruffalo and know that is well loved by so many children?

I’m feeling very glad that The Gruffalo is so popular ,but it makes me feel slightly dizzy when I think how many children are reading it in the evening as a bed time story!

We have five copies of The Gruffalo to giveaway!
